Democracy

A major election is held and a president that a country didn't necessarily vote into office garners control. The masses complain mildly and turn up their noses.

A major election is held and a president that a country didn't necessarily vote into office garners control. The streets amass with rioters, protesters, and police presence.

It's amazing how one country treats the process like it means something great, and another country treats the same process like picking their favorite Super Bowl commercial.

Now maybe I'm making derogatory comments towards the kettle, but how jaded have we become? Sure, we've got who everyone wanted in office now, save for those few delusional die hards on the right wing who keep swearing our head man is in cahoots with Al Queida, Marylin Manson, Anne Murray, Satan, and Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumm, but the most we got out of the questionable election of W was a bit of whining and some sarcastic comments. (Guilty)

Iranians, on the other hand, in a similar but not exactly the same situation, have been staging protests for days. Women are shedding their burkas (for lack of regional nomenclature) in protest. Streets are borderline war zones. The people, in so many words, are pissed off.

Where was that? Where did our revolutionary spirit go? It's still in the Constitution. It was telling us it's perfectly ok to toss out the government if it got this way. But we did...nothing. Then did it again 4 years later. In all fairness, it was like voting between your drinking buddy and a week old morgue resident, but that's not the point.

I seriously admire the Iranian people for speaking out and making a difference in a country where doing so could cost them their lives. I seriously wish we had had the moxy to do so ourselves, in a country where the most it would have got us is some bad press and glib remarks on Fox News.

It's clear the Iranians got jobbed in this election just like Americans got jobbed after the 2000 fiasco. The Supreme Court led by Antonia Scalia (whose son worked for the Bush recount team) basically said stop counting the votes, Bush wins. You're right: Americans have far too much to worry about than a mere stolen election.

It's sad, really. I'm seriously hoping things pick up in the next few months.

Hope things on the job front are going better for you than for me: I'm on my 3rd bout of unemployment since i was laid off from my job of over 17 years in August 2005. My industry -- publishing -- has been shot to hell.

I'm not one of those people who think Obama is infallible, but his policies deserve some more time. The other clown had 8 years of screw-ups, but an awful lot of people got rich under him, and they're the same ones trying to convince us that Obama is a socialist or a muslim... Watch for the outcry against his latest financial regulation proposal.

Oh, they're threatening layoffs...again...around my work place. I made it through the first round of them about a month ago. Not sure how I'll fare this time.

I've honestly stopped watching the US news...aside from The Daily Show and Colbert report (which at this point aren't any less credible than the other news channels). My college has Fox News locked in in the break areas. I'm smacked in the face daily by outright stupidity and manipulation. There are plenty of exes I could have stuck with if I wanted to deal with that.

CNN and MSNBC are no better. I flipped by one of them the other day to see 2 of the anchor ladies having a contest to see who could twitter or text faster.

I don't think I ever felt a true burning hatred until that moment.

A twittering contest? Jesus. Is that what we've become? A bunch of docile twittering twats?

Hope you make it through another round... if not, make of it what you can.

I feel an equal sense of passion and rage. Seeing them fighting for their freedom in ways they are not accustomed to...and their efforts being met with such violence and brutality...It just hits you in a certain place. And you don't know whether to tremble with rage or curl up in a ball and wail.

In an effort to take advantage of America's sick fascination with "reality" shows, I've fashioned a makeshift immunity idol and have it sitting at my desk.

I'm not 100% sure it will work, but I'm banking on the solid fact that my supervisors are all idiots.

Americans only get take to the streets these days if the American Idol finale was canceled or some fast-food giveaway went awry. We've become a fat, complacent nation.

I wouldn't be caught dead Twittering. And yes, CNN is truly awful.
